Book review: The Folklore of Discworld

Okay, so I'm a little slow on this one, and started reading another book [1] before writing this review. But I was trying to take the advice of End of Absence and go off the grid for a little, tiny bit.

Anyway. Folklore.

This was a fun look at the myffic [2] and narrative parallels between Discworld and earth. I have to admit that I skipped most of the earth-centric bits, in favor of learning about the Discworld creatures and legends, but had I been more dedicated/historically minded, I'm sure those parts would have been nice, too. As it was, I chuckled at the description of the Nac Mac Feegle and got a few ideas for which Discworld books to read next.

It was, at times, a bit dry, since it's more of a reference book than a story. But it would be an excellent companion book if you are, say, like my friend K., reading the series in chronological-written order from start to finish. Then it would be handy to learn about the dwarves of the Disc as you read their books, or the Temperance League of vampires.

While Folklore ties together many interesting bits of story and hearsay, in the end, it's not really clear why people have these stories. And that's alright. After all, "Legends don't have to make sense. They just have to be beautiful. Or at least interesting."

[1] We'll see how it goes, since it's fiction but not Discworld.
