Bookshelves, the ever-increasing need for

Discovered on the blog of one of my favorite authors: "I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves." - Anna Quindlen

If one is a reader, and not wholly committed to one's Kindl, one tends to collect books, sometimes at an alarming rate. Sometimes, one ends up with multiple copies of the same book [1], for better annotations, interesting covers [2], to "give away", in anthologies... And books, while easy to pack and having a certain kind of beautiful magnetism for a bibliophile, take up space. So much space.

You think you have just a reasonable amount, having gotten rid of entire boxes when packing to move - and then you unpack. And realize, despite your best efforts, you need yet another bookshelf.

I've got books stacked sideways on top of others, books in bags, books on tables. Someday we'll live in a house with built-in shelves, and it will be glorious. But for now, we'll just keep buying the DIY shelves from Target and hoping they don't crumble under the weight of the words.

Brief Reading Update (BRU? Yeah? Sure, let's do it.)
1. Nation  - Because what else do I read but Terry Pratchett? A solid entry. I mostly read it because it was seemingly Sir Terry's favorite of his own books. At least, Slip of the Keyboard gave that impression.
2. Two Old Women - A slim Alaskan legend. Learned about such things as building traps and chasing moose.
3. The Women of Brewster Place - Essentially a collection of same-universe short stories. It tells the tales of women living in this tenement. I usually don't go in for POV-switching novels, but each story was independent (though most touched on at least one other story), rather than a continuous narrative. Solid recommend.

[1] Hamlet for me. Completely unsurprising.

[2] It took everything in my power not to buy this version of The Hobbit.
